Iconic Snare Sounds #3 – Chad Smith

Another drummer who needs no introduction. The ever solid Chad Smith could quite possibly be the king of the loose groove and the rimshot. There’s no doubt that much of the grove behind the Red Hot Chili Peppers comes from the chemistry between Chad Smith and Flea.

But what we’re really talking about here is his snare sound. Chad delivers the great ringing rimshot which has been a driving force behind all the RHCP albums. There is no doubt that he has some great technical skills, and delivers solid playing both live and in the studio.

An endoresee of Pearl Drums, there is of course the Chad Smith Signature  Snare (and Chad Smith setup) which has been so popular due to is affordability, and obvious market appeal to fans of Chad and the Chilis. Of course, it still has to be played right.

Any one of the Chili’s albums showcases Chad’s talent through his loose groove and solid back line punch with Flea. The video below is Chad at a drum clinic playing along to RHCP tune ‘Charlie’ and shows just how loosely he grooves, but how tight he really is…

Until next time…
